Ka `Ohana o Kalaupapa is a nonprofit organization that is helping to spread the word and educate as many as possible about the good things that happened at Kalaupapa. Community Announcement: NIH Funded National Hearing Test - Free Until June 15

$

0
At least until June 15, the "National Hearing Test" is available free of charge and is conveniently conducted via telephone. It takes only about 10 minutes.

With funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, this screening test was developed by Communication Disorders Technology Inc. in partnership with Indiana University and the VU Medical Center in Amsterdam. It has been tested for accuracy and serves as a good screening tool to assess the need to seek professional assessment by an audiologist.

During the time that the test is free, simply call 866-223-7575 and follow the directions. Use a landline phone with a number pad separate from the handset. The test may not be valid if taken with a cellphone. If you are reading this after the free period, go to www.nationalhearingtest.org to fill out a short questionnaire and pay $8 for the test.

For more information, see our Star-Advertiser newspaper column for this week.

MAHALO for Participating: 2014 Kaua`i CC Annual Emergency Preparedness Exercise

$

0
Aloha Kaua`i CC Ohana,

Sending out a big "MAHALO!" to everyone who participated in and helped with our 2014 Kaua`i Community College - Emergency Preparedness Exercise: KCC Campus Crisis Management Team members (Exec Admin), Public Information Officers, Emergency Communications Designees, Campus Security, Safety Officers, KCC Nursing Professors and Nursing Students, KCC Faculty, Staff and Students in OSC, OCET, and LRC Buildings, Kaua`i Police Department, Kaua`i Fire Department, Kaua`i Red Cross, YWCA of Kaua`i, and KCC's PAU Violence Kaua`i group members.

For the 102 participants from our campus, first responding agencies, and community partners, it became very clear how important it is to have a plan and to be able to communicate with one another should an emergency occur. Regarding this year's drill, 'Response to Active Shooter Events' scenario, from the first exercise to the second one, we saw clear adjustments made to where people might evacuate, how they 'lock down', and especially how we would all communicate what was happening.

While we did hold a Hot Wash (quick debriefing) and After Action Review on the day of the exercise Thursday, May 29, 2014, we welcome any additional comments and feedback that you may have. Please send to: pwisting@hawaii.edu. The information and perspectives you share are invaluable and help us to improve our campus emergency response and evacuation plans (CEREP). The CEREP is a living document that will continuously change as we become aware of and identify the needs of our campus and apply best practices in emergency management and preparedness.

This was the first time our campus conducted an exercise of this scale, and while we know that there will always be areas for improvement, we can focus on and be proud of the fact that we have started the conversation - among offices and agencies - on what we can do now to better prepare.

Mahalo again for everyone's time. It was wonderful meeting you all face-to-face.
